Supporting SurLaLune...
Hello all,
As SurLaLune continues to grow, the need for funds to help it continue growing never goes away. Traffic is the highest ever and I expect March 2006 to be the busiest month we've ever had.
So I've been playing with more ideas to help me afford to spend as much time and money on the site as I do. Visit SurLaLune's CafePress store to see what you think!
The storefront is still very much under construction but many of the products are already listed and available. Let me know what you think! Right now we've focused on cool and breezy, but more inspirational designs will also be provided to meet a wider range of tastes. Designs with illustrations are also coming, so stay tuned...

Re: misc
This may sound utterly, utterly stupid, but...is there any chance of any of these shirts coming in black?
'Cause I'm a New Yorker, of course.

Re: misc
It's quite possible. And on my list to do, but are there any particular designs that appeal more than others that I should focus on first? There will be no obligation to buy, of course. I'll just be designing and adding it to the store.
I have some more themes coming this week, too. To be honest, I'm just having fun. My husband and I kept brainstorming and I thought it wouldn't hurt to try a lot of different ideas and see what worked. I needed a break from finishing the etext of Marian Roalfe Cox's Cinderella after over 100 work hours and finally reaching the Appendix. And as I finish I have more dreams for SurLaLune but know I can't afford to do them if I don't find a way to pay the bills.
There will be some journals, notecards and other stuff, too, featuring illustrations from SurLaLune. And if response is strong, a calendar for 2007.

Re: misc
You know what I would go for? I'd go for a black baby-doll that says "Once upon a time..." on the front.
Heh. I mean, I know you're not a take-out service or anything, but I like t-shirts that fit closely, but I don't like particularly girly slogand (I mean, not for myself). Or, ooh, could you do that great translation of the Perrault moral to LRRH, a shirt that says "Now, as then, 'tis simple truth / sweetest tongue hides sharpest tooth"? Or is that translation under copyright? Because I would totally buy that.
Are you thinking of doing illustrations on the shirts at all? I would love an illustration of Vasilissa holding the skull with fire inside, lighting her way. I really like the calendar/journal/notecards idea too.

What she said! I, too, like baby-doll t-shirts, and I would... not kill, but certainly consider various illegal activities, for a shirt with the LRRH moral.

Re: misc
"Now, as then, 'tis simple truth / sweetest tongue hides sharpest tooth."
Hmm, that is not a literal translation of Perrault. I believe it is from the film, Company of Wolves, but not the story by Carter. Question is did it appear anywhere else first? Is it a proverb that the film used, too?
Unfortunately, there are no black baby doll shirts available yet with Cafe Press. I can put it on the white baby doll and on the regular black. Hopefully black baby doll t's will be forthcoming though.
Any requests for font color? :)
Really, I'm an amateur graphic designer, having learned at my husband's side (he's a professional), so I can produce just about anything between the two of us.
Any other wish list ideas? If you've wished it, probably someone else has too.
Lang's version of the moral is a pretty close translatino of the original French. "Children, especially attractive, well bred young ladies, should never talk to strangers, for if they should do so, they may well provide dinner for a wolf. I say "wolf," but there are various kinds of wolves. There are also those who are charming, quiet, polite, unassuming, complacent, and sweet, who pursue young women at home and in the streets. And unfortunately, it is these gentle wolves who are the most dangerous ones of all"

Re: misc
I actually know this, from a paper I wrote a couple years ago--the movie used S.R. Littlewood's rather free translation of the moral. I don't know when he did it though...let me check on that...Ah, OK. 1912, S. R. Littlewood's translation, published as Perrault's Fairy Tales. So...it should be out of copyright if it was published in 1912, right?
Hee, font color. Well, if it's a white baby-doll, I would vote for black words except for "tongue" and "tooth" which should be dark red. On a black t-shirt, they should be white, I think.

Re: misc
Okay, I made a few attempts. Check out the Little Red Riding Hood store and see what I produced. I put "Sweetest tongue hides sharpest tooth" on the front with the SurLaLune logo and the longer version of the moral on the back.
If a black baby doll or something else comes available, I will also create a version for black since it requires a different technique for printing.
Thanks, Veronica, for the info on the moral's source. 1912 is way out of copyright.

Re: misc
Heidi, these are great!
Maybe there could be a "bad fairy" or "wicked fairy" T-shirt as a sort of counterpoint to the Fairy Godmother? Since bad fairies make things happen, too.

Wish List!
To add to the LRRH craze: How about a "Never Stray From the Path" or maybe a "Don't Eat Windblown Apples" offering? (In a spagetti tank, ideally, and with the SurLaLune logo on the back).

Re: Wish List!
Great ideas! Thank you. I will work on them.
I've added some illustrations into the store, too. The Dore illustration of LRRH and then two of Crane's, one for Beauty and the Beast and Frog Prince.

Re: Wish List!
More illustrations are up, now. Only t-shirts so far, but journals and such will be forthcoming. Anyway, I really liked "Never Stray From the Path" and did a green one for Hansel and Gretel and a red one for LRRH.
I like the "Windblown Apples" one, too, and have added it to my list.
Any other wonderful ideas or particular wish lists?
It's been a nice break to play with images from all of the writing and editing of late!

Re: Wish List!
Well, since you're taking requests, I guess I'll de-lurk...
I would love a Six Swans tshirt (the Goble and Gruelle illustrations are particularly striking), but I'm trying to think of lines form the story and can't (pathetic considering how much I've studied this tale). Hang on...
From Andersen's:
“Now I may speak” (my favorite, I think)
“I am innocent”
“Go out into the world and get your own living"
“Fly like great birds, who have no voice”
"Their lives hang upon your tongue"
Let me just say that you have made my day with this store. totally, totally awesome.

Re: Wish List!
You're welcome! It's very satisfying to play fairy godmother. Sorry that the spaghetti strap shirt (wasn't that your preferred shirt?) can't be printed on the back, but I did put the quote on the back of the other styles of shirts.
I'm going to work on a few Six Swans designs today. And Bad Fairy and Wicked Witch--so many wonderful ideas. And some other tales. I have to do something with Dancing Princesses, too, since it is one of my favorites. I can't seem to stop designing even if they never sell a single one.
Next thrill will to actually see someone wearing one!

Re: Wish List!
cwfaerie,
I'm uncomfortable with international copyright on Goble's Grimms tales, but the Gruelle and H. J. Ford illustrations are quite doable. Any votes for which Gruelle or Ford?
Edit: Here's a Wild Swans and Six Swans Shop.

Re: Wish List!
Heidi,
Hmmm. I realy like the Gruelle with the heroine being burned since I think that is such a strong moment in the story, but I think the Ford of the stepmother turning the boys into swans is a bit more cheery and might sell more t-shirts. Plus it's got the nice storybook frame.
I showed my husband, and he said that the Gruelle burning with the "'Now I may speak' she exclaimed, I am innocent" is a really good combination.
So I'm voting for the Gruelle for purley selfish reasons, but honestly, I'm just thrilled at having my wishes granted.
