Stories We Stopped Reading

People's honest comments in the Peter Pan thread have given me the courage to ask a question which I always want to know the answer to but only rarely dare to ask.

Which stories stopped you reading them?
And if there's a why then why/how did they grind you to a halt?

Most of the posters on SLL seem to be keen readers (would fanatical be too strong?) but I bet even most of us have given up on a book or two. I'll confess first...

Every one I know who loves speculative fiction loves Gabriel Garcia Marquez. His name regularly appears on lists of favourite/popular authors. My friends kept telling me that I should read "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Love in a Time of Cholera". I tried OHYoS. Within the first few pages I hated it. I think it might have been the style (translation?) but I'm not sure. I kept on with it. I stopped. I put it to one side for a while. I returned to it at a later date. I still hated it. If it the window had been open I'd have hurled the book out of the house.
I later tried some of Marquez' short stories (reputedly written in a very different style). I hated them. I found them physically readable (unlike OHYoS) but I couldn't see why anyone would bother? Yes, I know lots of you probably love Marquez but I don't and can't.

Reassure me that I'm not the only person who has hated an otherwise popular story by confessing your experiences here...

:)
