Romeo & Juliet
I was involved in a discussion about the theme of "I'd rather give up my life than live without you" in myth, books, and movies.
Can anyone help me expand my list? I know there are tons of stories, but the only ones I can think of right now are:
Romeo & Juliet
Pyramus and Thisbe
West Side Story
City of Angels (movie)
Orpheus and Eurydice
Hercules (the Disney version - he gives up being a god to live with Megara)
Thanks!

Re: Romeo & Juliet
>>Romeo & Juliet
Pyramus and Thisbe
West Side Story<<
...Isn't this being redundant?
Seeing as how Shakespeare's "Romeo" was as much a 16th-century "modernization" of Pyramus & Thisbe as "West Side Story" was of his own work.
(He may have kidded P&T in "Midsummer", but only to emphasize how awful the players were, and the original was still considered quality material in its day...)

Re: if I remember correctly
Diarmuid and Grainne.
Deirdre of the Sorrows and Naiose, I think.

Re: Romeo & Juliette
The Lady of Shalott and Lancelot (rather one-sided, that one)
The Highwayman and "Bess the Landlord's Daughter" from the Alfred Noyes poem
And it might be worth looking into ballads--"Helen of Kirkconnell"
comes to mind.
Best,
Erica
