Grimm translation by Edgar Taylor
I am going to be studying the history of the translation of the Grimm Fairy Tales into English over the last 170 years. I have started by just comparing the titles and have a problem that I hope one of you can solve.
I am using Edgar Taylor's 1823 translation and will follow those tales through untill the present. I have recently acquired the original German versions from 1812-1815, edited by Peter Dettmering (Kinder- und Hausmaerchen der Brueder Grimm: Erstdruckfassung 1812-1815) and I cannot find the equivalent German tales for 6 of the tales from Taylor's Popular Stories (Hans in Luck, The Travelling Musicians, The Wonderful Musician, The Dog and the Sparrow, Frederick and Catherine, and The Three Children of Fortune).
I have been able to find the names of the tales in later German editions, and I was wondering if you knew something about this. I thought Taylor based his translation on the first edition, so I cannot understand why these 6 Tales do not appear in my copy of the first edition.
Any help will be much appreciated.

As the basis of his translation, Taylor used the Grimms' 2nd edition of 1819 (which would have been for him the most recent edition of the KHM). A caveat: not all the tales in Taylor's German Popular Stories are from Grimm.

You've saved me hours of searching! I'll try and get a reprint of the 2nd edition and use that for my thesis instead.

The second edition of the KHM was republished by Heinz Rölleke in the Eugen Diederichs Verlag in 2 volumes in 1982 (with later reprints). I don't think it's still in print.

I have just found and ordered the Heinz Rölleke edition from a second-hand bookshop in Germany.
