SurLaLune's Review: A lesson about healthy
weight and physical fitness lurks in the pages of this picture
book. Tabby the cat spends her time eating and sleeping until
the day she gets stuck in her cat-flap. The vet's solution? A
kitten! The new playmate eats Tabby's food before Tabby can reach
it. This causes Tabby to start moving and working to beat the
kitten to the food bowl. All ends happily as Tabby and the kitten
become friends when a sleeker Tabby gains enough energy to romp
and play with her new companion.
McKinlay's short text is perfect for preschoolers
while the subject matter is pertinent for grade schoolers, too.
As childhood obesity becomes a hotter topic than ever before,
this book addresses the issue without obvious didacticism. It's
comforting that Tabby finds her own solutions through exercise
while still eating, not through an enforced diet or exercise regime.
Britta Teckentrup's illustrations are cheerful and are a fine
accompaniment to the text.
Recommended.
