Searching for Yiddish version of a tale
Hi y'all. Just received this email in my inbox and thought it might generate some responses on the board. Yiddish tales are not my personal strong point. Here goes:
"A friend of mine posted me last week and asked me if I recalled a joke in Yiddish which was analogous to the tale told in Straparola's Ninth Night, Fourth Tale. I replied that I happened to have a broken set of Straparola. Sure enough, I happened to have that very tale: It was about "Papira Schizza the Fool." But I had no recollection of a Yiddish
or a Jewish version of the tale. I scanned several collections, so I decided to try to find it online. Much to my surprise, and delight, there was the whole of Straparola on your site. But I have been scanning the Net in vain for tales of numbskulls --the humorous tales of "The Wise Men of Chelm" seemed a likely place to search, but so far I have not found an analogue in Yiddish. I received one from my correspondent
drawn from a famous Sicilian collection. But, in Yiddish, none. Anysuggestions would be appreciated."
