Do you know this fairy tale?
A young woman cam into my library (Glastonbury, CT) looking for a fairy tale she had read some years earlier. I have spent several hours looking and have not found it. Here is what she remembers: There are three beautiful sisters. A scholar/peddler visits and lures them away. They chase an apple that rolls away. They end up in his huge house with many rooms, one of which is locked and forbidden. Eventually, each (two?) goes in and when he finds out, he turns them into birds in cages with no locks. Third sister finds a room and a book with a piece of string/hair with a spell that frees all the previously captured girls. Some similarities to Bluebeard but I don't that is correct. Thanks for any help.

Re: Do you know this fairy tale?
The tale sounds like Aarne-Thompson type 311: The Heroine Rescues Herself and Her Sisters, which is very similar to the AT-312 of Bluebeard. There are many, many variants of AT-311 but I'm not familiar with the exact details of the version you describe. Fitcher's Bird by the Grimms is one of the best known variants, but it uses an egg, not an apple.

fairy tale
I don't know the story, but it rather reminds me of a short story
in Angela Carter's collection 'The
Bloody Chamber', where many of the stories are based on fairy
tales. The story in question was called the 'Erl-King'. An Erlking
was some sort of spirit in German folklore if I recall correctly,
although in the story he's sort of a cross between Robin Goodfellow
and La belle dame sans merci (or le beau homme sans merci if you'd
rather).

Re: poker sites
It seems the board is getting filled with spam. It may be necissary to restrict it to registered users only.

Re: poker sites
Which won't help those of us who have to post unregistered, since EZBoard has their screwed-up system of only allowing users to register with one board for free.
We'd be cutting a few regular posters off with the temporary idiots--Better to keep what's important.

Re: poker sites
That can't be true. I'm registered, I don't pay, and I post on more than one board.

Re: poker sites
You can upgrade to "Universal user"--or some such--for free, and then post on all EZ boards. I had to change my user name when I did it, though--I can't recall why.
Best,

Registration
You probably had to change your name because universal access means the name needs to be available on all boards, whereas limited access only needs it to be available on, say, Surlalune.
I do think it would be a pity to limit posting access to registered users, however, as many people coming in here with questions are not registered (at least to Surlalune), not to mention people like DerekJ.
For what it's worth, I've always been impressed with the speed and efficiency with which spam has been removed on these boards (thank you, Heidi!), but I realise that it must be pretty frustrating for our moderator.

Re: poker sites
Thank you. I try hard to keep this board moderated and running smoothly. Even when I don't post, I watch the board every day although it gets difficult when traveling as much as I have this summer and plan to this fall. It may take me several hours to get rid of spam instead of the usual couple when I am home.
I've debated the registered user issue with myself over and over. The spam has been really bad recently and is coming from an entirely new IP address each time, so blocking does little to help the issue. Still, about half of the students and other visitors here never register and I hate to discourage them. I also shudder at the extra email asking how to register. I get them now even though registration isn't required.
I may have to restrict to registered users while I am in Europe this fall since my internet access will be even less reliable. But we will see.

Spam
Might you be able to recruit a trustworthy deputy moderator to babysit the boards while you're gone? I don't know how EZboard does things, so I couldn't say how feasible that is, but if you could, it might save some wear on your inbox!

Re: poker sites
Heidi, you do such a fantastic job, and we're all grateful for it.
Have you heard any stirrings about the migration of ezboards to the new system (Yuku)? I'm on another ezboard, and they're in quite a tizzy about it over there.
