Book ID?: Siamense Cats Murals and Rats
I received an email from someone trying to ID this book. Sound familiar to anyone?
"Now, I know I'm not giving you much to go on, but I never had a hope in
the world of locating my favorite childhood book until the internet came
along, and finding your lovely site has restored it.
Here is what I know: It was a very large anthology of fairy tales published
in the 1960s. I bought it at my gradeschool, possibly '65-'70, during a
bookfare that came each year. I thought it may have been associated with
Scholastic Books, but I could never verify that. It had the standard classic
tales as well as some that I've never read elsewhere. One in particular was
my favorite; it facinated and terrified me! I pestered my older sister to
read it to me because I too afraid to read it alone.
It was the story of a young asian boy, a servant, who was facinated by
the murals of Siamese cats
on the walls of his masters home. The palace was plagued by rats, however,
and the boy was warned NOT to be caught in the palace rooms after dark. Of
course his curiosity burned to know the mystery behind the warning, so he
hid himself within a cabinet until dark. Well, the exotic cats of the murals
by day became living, ferocious, hunters by night in a feeding frenzy,
preying on the rats. There was an illustration for every story, I believe,
including this one which was quite original."
You can either post here or email me if you have an answer.
Thanks,
Heidi

Re: Book ID?: Siamense Cats Murals and Rats
This is "The Boy Who Drew Cats" from a book of Japanese folktales by Lafcadio Hearn. It is the boy himself who draws the cat murals. A great, spooky story.

Ah yes, I actually knew that. It has appeared on the board many times before. Memory loss comes after 8 years of running a site, I guess.
Anyway, I've just added the text to SurLaLune for all the future searchers:

boy who drew cats
Ah, yes, I love this story. The version I have is a little bit different from the one you describe, Heidi-the cat murals are in a disused monastery, and the boy grows up to become a marvellous artist with cats as his speciality. This version is told by Arthur Levine and the wonderful illustrations are by Frederic Clement.
