This Cinderella Story
I am looking for a movie based on the version of Cinderella by The Brothers Grimm.
I am pretty sure that it isn't called Cinderella. I doesn't have a fairy godmother instead her father gives her a branch from a tree which she plants (possibly on her mothers grave) and the tree drops down dresser for her. I can remember much about it as I watched it when I was little. The version I watched was in English so I am after the English name.

Re: This Cinderella Story

From the list on the SurLaLune site and what I recall of the movie on TV, I think it might be
"Three Nuts for Cinderella." www.amazon.com/gp/product...3703?n=130

Re: This Cinderella Story
I'm not sure that, that is the movie I am looking for because I don't remember anything about nuts. In the one I am after she plants the branch and it growns into a tree and the tree drops down dresses for her.

Re: This Cinderella Story
The dresses are in the nuts. It's in line with the Grimm's version of the story. (Perrault used the fairy godmother version.) The tree that gives the nuts grows over her mother's grave. (Memory can be faulty, especially when it comes to recalling something seen on TV.) I thought of this version because I recall seeing it on TV years ago. Cinderella's residence was rustic, much like a log cabin. I believe this version also had her separating the seeds and the ashes.

If it is another version, do you have an idea of when it was that you saw it? (Year, or even decade?) There's a new version of Cinderella almost every year.

Is this the version you mean?

As well as the famous Czech film "Three Chestnuts for Cinderella" (1973), directed by Vaclav Vorlicek, there was also a German-French-Czech television production called "Aschenputtel" (1990), directed by Karin Brandauer. It was very faithful to the Brothers Grimm, rather than the Charles Perrault version, and had a rather cruel ending with the stepsisters' eyes being plucked out by a flock of turtle doves. The film was made in German, but an English-dubbed version does exist (I remember it being screened on British televison when I was younger). It is not mentioned on the SurLaLune "Cinderella" web page, but it is listed in the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com). Alas, the DVD isn't available in the English-speaking countries, but a VHS video version does seem to be available in Germany.

Maybe
It could be this one as there were no nuts, the dresses fell down from the tree and it was the father that gave her the branch. I don't remember the sisters getting their eyes pecked out but one of them did cut their toes off so that the foot would fit in the shoe. The only thing is that I don't remember it being dubbed but this was 10+ years ago and I was only little then and may not have noticed I will have to do more research into Aschenputtel and see if this is the one.
