Forgotten Fairy Tale
Hello. I was wondering if someone could help me remember a forgotten book (fairy tale) from my youth. I remember very little about it, other than something like it's about this boy - I think his name is Simple Simon or Silly Simon, or something like that, who helped out these men who thought one of them was missing. This was because when any of them counted them up, the one counting forgot to count himself. The boy counted them and came up with the right number, of course, and they thought he was so smart. I think they made him a prince or something like that - I can't remember. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Forgotten Fairy Tale
I know this tale as 'The Twelve men of Gotham'. A copy of it can be found on the web here:www.pitt.edu/~dash/type1287.html. It's not exactly how you described it, but the main elements are the same.

I hope this helps. :)

Re: Forgotten Fairy Tale
it's based on a Chelm story (and a Gotham story) and has had a number of picture book incarnations, and can be found as well as in a collection of Russian retellings with pictures by Charles Mikolaycak: Twelve Clever Brothers and Other Fools: Folktales from Russia, by Mirra Ginsburg.

Re: Forgotten Fairy Tale
Estrilde and Jane,

thank you so much! I'll have to check out the stories/books you both mention.

The link that was left didn't work, but no matter - I really appreciate both of your time!
