Re: Recent Publications
Rencently published is Fairyopolis:
A Flower Fairies Journal. Produced in the style of Wizardology,
Egyptology,
and Dragonology,
with flaps, large format, removable letters, reproduction of vintage
invitations and train tickets, gem on the cover, etc., it's actually
a compilation of Cecily M. Barker's flower fairies illustrations
(and text?) reset in a journal format. The copyright for both the
text and illustrations are for the Cecily Mary Barker Estate. It's
a brilliant marketing move since it fits right into an extremely
popular format--although the publisher for the "-ology"
books is Candlewick Press, and this is published by Penguin Group.
Best,
Alice

Mr. Humperdinck's Wonderful Whatsit
Hi All
I posted a message on this thread about 18 months ago to tell you about the publication of my children's novel Mr. Humperdinck's Wonderful Whatsit in South Africa. This is is just a quick update:
The book was awarded the M.E.R. Award for the Best Children's Book of 2005. (It is one of a series of literary awards that is sponsored by the South African media giant Via Afrika.) It has received some very favourable reviews in the press, and the reason I write this post now is because I have just discovered that "You Magazine" and it's Afrikaans language edition has publihed a VERY good review! "You" is the biggest and most influential family/general magazine in South Africa.
All I need now is an American publisher to purchase the American rights!
I have recently created a profile on Myspace: Have a look at www.myspace.com/wlouw
Regards
Wynand

Publications
Hi, I pop in here from time to time but have never bothered to post. This time though I thought I'd put up a link to one of my stories, Winter's Tale, which was published online last year. I know it's not a recent publication, but the site that took it is predominantly literary realist. Consequently, the story, which is modern fantasy with a slight nod towards fairy tale (a tale within the tale), has probably not been noticed in fantasy, fairy tale, mythological circles. There's another modern fantasy of mine at the same site, a story called South By South-East which can be accessed through the link below. But it's Winter's Tale that's probably more relevant, though it's not a retelling of a fairy tale or myth.

Winter's Tale
Should just add that the page title Crossing the Firth comes up when that link for Winter's Tale is accessed. This is just a story that was previously published at the same site. The page name was never updated for the newer story that's now there.

Winter's Tale
Terri, Thanks for the lovely comment. I'm at work on a novel right now (completely different genre), and have had to leave short stories for the time being even though I have a big backlog of them waiting to be sorted.

Re: Upcoming Publications Part 6
Hi all,
A while back, I posted here with a question about flying fairies ... I'd like to again thank those who gave me helpful responses. Here's the humor piece I ended up writing as a result, newly posted at Strange Horizons:

The Fairytale Tarot
Our tarot deck, the Fairytale Tarot, was mentioned here quite some time back, when it was still work-in-progress. It's now published:
www.fairytaletarot.com
The deck uses traditional stories - not "Disneyfications"! It broadly follows the RWS (Rider Waite Smith) tarot structure, but we've also tried to remain true to the original tales, not changing them to fit the tarot in any forced way.
It's a great deck for single-card draws and short readings - we've found it's proving very interesting in use.
I've put a link to Surlalune on the page of links to texts online. Hope it sends some people your way. Thanks!

Red Shoes
I have an article entitled 'Sex and Sin: the Magic of Red Shoes'
in a book on the cultural
history of shoes coming out in September,
It forms part of my ongoing research into the history of red shoes, and takes Hans Christian Andersen's 1845 fairytale as its starting point for a brief look at the hold of red shoes on the cultural imagination. I argue that 'The Red Shoes' is a very personal story for the author that draws on elements of his psychological make-up to give the tale its disturbing resonance.
The piece is necessarily brief, but there's lots more material brewing where that came from - watch this space.

Water Shaper
I've been more of a lurker than a participant here in the last several
months, but I did want to mention that my new novel
Water Shaper is out. It's a fantasy but has a good bit of folklore
woven in, as well as a secondary narrator who's a storyteller.

Re: Latest releases
I thought people might be interested to know that the recently released
Collector's Edition of The Princess Bride, which is available
in both blue
for boys and pink
for girls, contains a twenty-minute featurette called "Love
is Like a Storybook Story" (I did not name it), in
which three scholarly experts discuss the relationship between the
movie and fairy tales. I am one of those experts; Helen Pilinovsky
is another. It's pretty good, we think.

Re: Latest releases
Darn, I hate double dipping in DVDs, but now I am seriously tempted to get a new copy of Princess Bride. I've already had to replace it once but perhaps a third time will be most charming with this personal bonus. Now do I want pink or blue?
Congratulations, Laura and Helen!
