Queen story
Hello! I am currently looking for folk tales to tell. I would like to be a professional storyteller eventually but am currently looking for opportunities as an amateur so that I can get experience. Recently started telling at a local nursery (under fives) but am keen to get experience with the fives and upwards.
A local library has offered me a chance to tell a story at the library. It apparently is part of a birthday celebration and the children are 7 and 8. The theme will be queens. So I need a story about a queen.
I do have a story somewhere about a queen that lost her looks but think it may be a little too long. The other story that comes to mind is Rumpelstiltskin. Heroine is a young queen. I like the story (which is essential) but wonder if there may be something else that may be better. Lots of stories about princesses - fewer about queens.
So, is Rumpelstiltskin suitable do you think? And you know of any other stories? Story should last 10 minutes maximum. Event is in a fortnight's time. Thank you.

Re: Queen story
One of my all time favorite stories was about the Snow Queen. Do
you know that one? Here is a very thorough version, but you'd probably
want to parse it down for the five year olds. http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/snowqueen/index.html
I know that I was five when I saw a theatre production of the Snow Queen, and it thoroughly captivated me.

Re: Queen story
Thank you. A good story, yes, but much too long. I will only have 10 minutes max!

Re: Queen story
I just brought up THE WHITE CAT in a different thread about fathers and sons, but the white cat in many versions of the tale is a queen under a spell. Here's the SurLaLune link: www.surlalunefairytales.com/authors/aulnoy/whitecat.html.
Best,
Alice

Re: Queen story
Thank you Alice. It's certainly a good story. Again, I think it may well be a bit on the long side for small children. Talking aloud is slower than reading to oneself. I'll reread it and think again.
