Endicott's Journal of Mythic Arts Spring Issue now live
Wow...this is truely one of our most amibitious issues to date. Do stop in and have a look at the new Spring Issue of the Journal of Mythic Arts. Terri and I put the finishing touches on it, even as we flying out the door to Wiscon (nothing like dueling laptops!).
But what an offering! This issue deals with the themes of Death, Rebirth and Resurrection. In the reading Room, there is a splendid article by emerging literary talent Hal Duncan on death and rebirth in contemporary mythic literature (with an amazing reach from ancient myths to modern popculture demons like serial killer Starkweather, from Inanna to Buffy.) Scholar and author, Kathie Carlson has given us a brilliant study on Persephone and Demeter. Terri examines the role of death in fairy tales and Vision Fast guide, Munro Sickafoose details the journey from death to rebirth in the Vision Fast journey.
Our fiction this issue features two original short stories from cutting edge author, Alan DeNiro and the sublime Karen Joy Fowler. We also have a classic reprint from Jane Yolen, Godmother Death.
We are pleased to announce the development of a whole new section of the Journal: The Writing Room with articles on literature, the writing process and individual authors. For our debut there is an article on juvenile fantasy literature from Julie Bartel, a study of Pamela Dean's Secret Country by Eve Sweetser and a classic from Terri, On Myth and Writing.
In the Gallery we are featuring a woman whose work simply takes my breath away--unique, evocative and moving. The Heart's Desire: The Art of Jeanie Tomanek. Additionally we have redesigned the webpages of an older gallery to better feature the visionary art of Erica Swadley
In the Crossroads oh my! Howard Gayton, a Commedia dell'arte actor and director, has let us peek at his journals when he traveled to Porto, Portugal to direct and instruct a group of talented acting students. Together they created a play for children based on the Portuguese folk tale The Big Fish. This is a fascinating journal, that describes the process, the philosophy, the influences, the grittiness of developing a production from conception to stage.
And we are rich, rich in poets again--almost too numerous to mention but here are a few: Jane Yolen's classic When Raven Sang, Marisa de los Santos's achingly beautiful poem of grief Wiglaf, Veronica Schanoes modern take on The Odyssey, Bob Hicok's terrifying encounter with death in Bedtime Story, Chicano poet and author, Pat Mora's Llantos de la Llorna, Lessons from the Wailer and Ryan Van Cleave's journey to the underworld, Aesculapius in the Underworld.
