Shrek!
I am currently undertaking a study based on the evolution of the fairytale and looking specifically at its move into the medium of film. I am looking at the 'Shrek' films as an example of postmodern parody. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on which arne-thompson types they can see in it or which of Propps functions are evident within it. (I am trying to 'self-educate' in the ways of propp amd its tough going!) Also if anyone has any suggestions of films I should look at as stepping stones to shrek Id be grateful! Thanks! Jacqui

Re: Shrek!
If you're looking at stepping stones then you're practically looking at the entire history of animation. There have been many fairy tales adapted and parodied in animated shorts and movies, particularly in Disney films.

Yes, I realise that, and have gone quite a distance to doing so but am looking for opinions as to any particular films based on a fairy tale (not necessarily animated and not necessarily disney) which particularly stood out for people as making a break from the norm. for example both 'aladdin' and 'the little mermaid' are not completly typical of disney versions of the tales if the characters are closely examined. An American Cinderella (not sure if this is the exact title) is not an animation but still loosly based on the cinderlla tale type.

Re: Shrek
Can we give the opinion that we think Vladimir Propp's theories are eyeroll-worthy?
Heh heh... um, sorry.
