Rumplestiltskin-like deals
I'm searching for all fairy tales that have Rumplestilskin-like deals in them, where someone agrees to give away their child in exchange for a wish or favor. It could also be something where they give away something else precious in the future for something that's valuable to them now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Rumplestiltskin-like deals
Hmm... I believe there is a Polish story in which a king is extremely thirsty and tries to take a drink from a well, but since there's no bucket he just decides to lean over and stick his head into the water. When he tries to get up, he finds his beard has been seized by a demon, and in return for the drink of water he must give up something in his castle which he did not know was there before.
The king agrees, since he knows everything in his castle, and goes home. Later, he finds out his wife has just given birth to a son (which is really wierd--how could he NOT know?!). Stricken by the deal he made with the demon, the king determines not to give up his little boy.
So, in the end the prince (who is an adult by the time he encounters the demon... talk about dodging the bill :D ) ends up doing three (impossible) tasks for the demon with the aid of the lovely Hyacinth--who is the daughter of the demon. The prince marries Hyacinth after some complications (he leaves her for another woman... cough... because he didn't listen to her and fell under a spell), and it ends pretty happily.
I'm not sure what it's titled, but it's in a book of fairy tales titled "The Green Fairy Book." I'll have to dig it out of my book cabinet, but for now I guess the title will be enough, right?

Re: Rumplestiltskin-like deals
Try Tales Similar to Rumpelstiltskin.
And the tale described above from the Green Fairy Book is King Kojata.

Re: Rumplestiltskin-like deals
Rapunzel? A woman begs her husband to climb the wall of the witch's garden so that she can taste the plants that grow therein. One taste isn't enough so she asks her husband to go back claiming that she will die else she gets a taste of the plant again. He is caught by the witch and they are made to promise to give the witch their child when it is born.

Yes, King Kojata! Thank you, Heidi. (I could never remember names too well, unless they were simple. :D)
