ghosts
I'm looking for fairytales involving ghosts (other than ghost stories where their role is just to be scary), as well as any interesting interpretations people may have about them.

I loved (I think it was) Ellen Steiber in the Armless Maiden collection 's ideas about the queen's ghost in Brother and Sister, that it's all about being seen, identity and invisibility, to make a gross oversimplification. And then there's a number of Chinese, and I think also Japanese (and therefore probably also Korean) stories about ghost lovers and the like which have such a wistful romanticism.

I'm sure there must be others- can anyone suggest any?

Re: ghosts
There's The Boy who left home to find out about the shivers or whatever else it's called. I tried googling for it but it kept calling up the Faerie Tale Theatre version of it (which was one of my favourites as a kid, incidentally). Perhaps it is known as something else as well? Anyone?

Re: ghosts
The two Grimm's versions are The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was
www.surlalunefairytales.c...hfear.html and The King's Son Who Feared Nothing www.surlalunefairytales.c...thing.html

The Jim Henson Storyteller version of The King's Son is called Fearnot.

Re: ghosts
Ah, thanks.

There's also The Legend of Sleepy Hollow although I do not know if that "qualifies".
