I couldn't find the exact meaning of "Ashenputtel" but it's similar to words meaning "assumption."
Ashenputtel the story is a variation of Cinderella.

It essentially means Cinderella. Ashen is for ashes or cinders in German. An early translator decided cinders was the best translation for whatever reason or we might have been reading about Ashesella all these years instead.

I think it means "Ashen Girl",or "Ashen Faced Girl". Something along those lines.
