Deerskin
i recently read deerskin...loved it! wondering if there are other fairy tales retold in a similiar way to this one... sad and gloomy in the beginning but a happy ending.

Re: Deerskin
If you are looking for re-tellings, try browsing the titles in “A Fairy Tale Reading List,” one of the recommended reading lists at The Endicott Studio web site:
www.endicott-studio.com/lists/list-fairyTale.html
It’s also going to be worth your while to look at the “Modern Interpretations” for the annotated tales at this site – just choose your tale and click on “Modern Interpretations” on the left-hand menu to see a list of modern tellings of that tale.
As a short list of novels that might fill your criteria, I’d recommend (in no particular order) Fitcher’s Brides, by Gregory Frost, Tam Lin, by Pamela Dean, Briar Rose, by Jane Yolen, Winter Rose, by Patricia McKillip, and The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy.
For short stories, you might want to check out Angela Carter’s short story collection, The Bloody Chamber, and any and all of the Datlow and Windling anthologies.
Hope this helps,
Erica

Re: Deerskin
Also, try the other fairy tale books by Robin McKinley, author of Deerskin. And the wonderful fairy tale novels by Donna Jo Napoli.

Re: robin mckinley
There is a prince in Spindle's End. I'd say more, but I think you'll enjoy the book more if I don't.

Re: thanks
Definitely check out Donna Jo Napoli's books, such as Zel
(based on Rapunzel), Bound (based on Cinderella),
and Spinners (based on Rumplestiltskin). Robin McKinley's Beauty
(based on Beauty and the Beast) is also well worth reading. And
Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl.
