Request for information on Phoenix in Chinese folk tales
I'm looking for information on the Phoenix and Chinese
folk lore. The other day when I was reading the Chinese
folk novel, Monkey, translated by Arthur Waley, I read
a passage which talked about the Jade Emperor's chariot
being pulled by four Phoenixes...and later of a tower of
5 Phoenixes. Translation is, of course, always an issue,
but my curiosity was tweaked since most tales of the
Phoenix are clear there is only one at a time.
Since then I've read a bit about the Feng-Huang or "Chinese Phoenix" which does seem to show up at least in couples sometimes. Some web sites say there is no relationship to the Chinese Phoenix and the Western Phoenix, others seem less clear.
Can anyone refer me to some good sources? I'm in the process of writing an epic tale ( a bit of a diversion for me
as you will see from my website: www.ellertson.com)
Phoenix research is important.
Thanks.......Wendy

Re: Request for information on Phoenix in Chinese folk tale
Hi,
Thought I'd mention a specific tale about Feng Huang--the Chinese Phoenix.
As stated in the info from the previously suggested link, the Chinese Phoenix is often paired with a Dragon. "The Dazzling Pearl," is the tale of Golden Phoenix and Jade Dragon.
Best,

The Dazzling Pearl
Thanks, Meg. Do you know where I might find the story of "The Dazzling Pearl"? I'd like to read it. Wendy

Re: Request for information on Phoenix in Chinese folk tale
Thanks for the website location. I hadn't found that one.
I have been in contact with a prof. of Chinese literature
at U. of Michigan (who happens to be the father-in-law
of our daughter)...so have more literature to research.
Thanks again...Wendy

Re: The Dazzling Pearl
Hi Wendy!
The book "The Moon Maiden" by Hua Long (actually a group of artists) is what I have. It has "The Dazzling Pearl" and 10 or so other adaptations of Chinese folktales.
You can buy it at here:
