Stories about Fairies
I've received a request from a patron to bulk up the number of books about fairies or containing stories about fairies in the juvenile lit collection at my library. Any suggestions or favorites?

Re: Stories about Fairies
The Little People: Stories of Fairies, Pixies, and Other Small Folk by Neil Philip

A Child's Book of Faeries by Tanya Robyn Batt

The Complete Book of the Flower Fairies (Flower Fairies Series) by Cicely Mary Barker

For fiction, might also consider Wendy Froud and Terri Windling Sneezle books.

Problematic for a library with removable parts, but kids love it:

Fairyopolis by Cicely Mary Barker

Re: Stories about Fairies
Books primarily about fairies:
_The Fairy Rebel_ by Lynn Reid Banks
_The Moorchild_ by Eloise McGraw
_The Wee Free Men_ by Terry Prachett

Books with fairies as supporting characters:
_Ella Enchanted_ and _The Two Princesses of Bamarre_ by Gail Carson Levine
_The Ordinary Princess_ by MM Kaye
_An Earthly Knight_ by Janet McNaughter

also try _Finding Fairies_ by McCann, Monson-Burton, and Hohn, which has delightful illustrations and fairy lore from all over the world.

Have fun!

Re: Stories about Fairies
There's a long "Further Reading" list of books in the back of The Faery Reel, which is an anthology of original fairy fiction for young adult readers that I edited with Ellen Datlow (Viking, 2004). The book has just been re-released in paperback, and contains stories by some of the people on this board, as well as art by Charles Vess.

Here are some YA and Middle-grade books from that list:

Tithe by Holly Black
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi
I Was a Teenage Fairy by Francesca Lia Block
Faerie Wars by Herbie Brennan
The Hob's Bargain by Patricia Briggs
Summerland by Michael Chabon
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
Tam Lin by Pamela Dean
Jack of Kinrowan by Charles de Lint
The Little Country by Charles de Lint
Stealing the Elf-King's Rose by Diane Duane
The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany
Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess
The Lastborn of Elvinwood by Lisa Haldeman
A Dark Horn Blowing by Dahlov Ipcar
Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones
A Midsummer's Nightmare by Garry Kilworth
The Stones are Hatching by Geraldine McCaughrean
The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw
Winter Rose by Patricia A. McKillip
The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Hannah's Garden by Midori Snyder
The Faery Flag (a collection of stories and poems) by Jane Yolen

Particular favorites are Stardust, The Moorchild, and Hannah's Garden.
