into the woods
Can anyone tell me about the significance of the "the woods" in fairy tales. It seems that all the children are always banished to the woods. Hanzel and Gretel, Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, etc. Or where I might be able to find more on this topic.

Re: into the woods
For the most part it represented the unknown and mysterious. It could also be dangerous because anyone or anything could be hiding there.

"Into the Woods" was the theme of the Autumn 2004 issue of the Journal of Mythic Arts. You can check it out here: www.endicott-studio.com/jMA04Autumn/index.html.

Magical woodlands are also discussed in this article on Green Man and Forest Myths: www.endicott-studio.com/gal/galgreen.html
