Protocol for quoting from the boards?
I'm finishing up the Author's Note to my current novel, and I would dearly like to quote one particular post from a thread in the archives. Shall I contact the poster directly, go ahead and just quote her (as if from any publication), or what? Is there an acceptable format for references to Cyberspace?
Thank you!

Re: Protocol for quoting from the boards?
Most of the citation protocols now have an accepted form for online citation. What form it is depends on what format you're using. The MLA form is this:
Author's name (last name, first name, if possible). "Title of the Document (as given in the subject line, such as "Re: Protocal for quoting from the boards?")." Online posting. Date the material was posted. Name of the Forum. Date you accessed the material. <URL>.
So, as an example:
Schanoes, Veronica. "Re: Protocol for quoting from the boards?."
Online posting. 3 September 2005. SurLaLune Fairy Tales. 3 September
2005. <http://pub25.ezboard.com/fsurlalunefairytalesfrm1.>

Re: Protocol for quoting from the boards?
Veronica, how handy for me that you've responded to this post, since you are the very person I wished to quote! I thought your comments regarding sympathy for Rumpelstiltskin from this thread were very astute, and they've really stayed with me. How do you feel about a reference like, "Folklorist Veronica Schanoes writes (insert salient quotation)..."?
Email me if you'd rather continue this discussion off-board (do you still have my address?)
Thanks!

Re: Protocol for quoting from the boards?
Hi Greensleeves,
Thank you for the kind words. I'm honored that you want to quote me! I'm not quite a folklorist--I tend to work more on revisions than on the tales themselves--but you can do it any way that suits you. What are you writing? (Just out of interest, really.) And you can email me too, if you'd rather.
