Need help identifying a story.
All right, Nickolodeon used to air an anime back in the late 80's-early 90's called "Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics" (the Nippon Animation series Grimm Masterpiece Theater and New Grimm Masterpiece Theater made into the same series). Needless to say, it featured animated adaptations of different stories (it's version of "The Wolf and the Fox" is the reason I'm a fox fan), but there's one in particular I've never been able to find the original version of:
The episode called "Hans, the Man of Iron", or something like that, and it started with the capture of the titular giant. Afterwards, we're treated to a bratty prince who looses his golden ball, and he chases it into the dungeon where Hans is being held. The giant takes the ball, forcing the prince to open the dungeon to get it, at which point Hans decideds to make his escape, taking the prince in tow.
They arrive in a forest, where Hans shows the prince a magical pool that reflects his soul. The prince looks in to see an ugly fish-man staring back and is horrified. Hans tells him that the only way to change his soul is to become a better person, and so the prince sets off to live as a peasent in another kingdom and work for a living, though he starts of as a complete bumbler, getting fired from every job he takes up.
Eventually, he manages to make a living as a gardner, and becomes quite good at it, even impressing the princess of the land with the flowers he's grown. But an evil army is prepairing to invade the country, and the king is prapairing to surender. The prince tries to rally the people to fight back, but no one is willing to risk their necks, so the prince returns to the magic pool and tries to enlist Hans' help. Hans tells him to look in the pool again, and this time he sees his own reflection as proof that he's changed, and as a reward an entire army of white knights emerges from the pool, and he leads them off to battle the invaders.
After his victory, the king meets with the leader of the knights and asks him to remove his helmet. To everyone's suprise, it's the gardner! And he marries the princess and the story ends.
I got to see the episode again recently, but still some of the details are fuzzy (I think I remember him being tasked at one point to make sure nothing disturbs the pool, and he winds up allowing a leaf to land in it). Nevertheless, I think it's a good summery. Any idea which fairy tale it is? I've checked but can't seem to find anything matching the title, and the closest matches are completely different stories.

Re: Need help identifying a story.
Hi Eien! The fairytale you're looking for is called "Iron Hans"
- you can find the story in English here: www.pitt.edu/~dash/grimm136.html
.
I illustrated this once for art class, so it holds a special place in my memory, but it helps that your summary was so detailed and accurate.
Hope this helps!

Thanks alot!
For a minute there, I was afraid it was just the invention of the animators, since I never saw it in any online collection. Thanks for the help!
