Re: mysterious fairy tale
I believe that's one of the stories about King Midas. For a reason that I now forget--I think he tricked Athena into playing pan pipes which made her look silly with her cheeks all puffed out--he was cursed with asses' ears. He kept them under a hat, and nobody knew except for his...hairdresser, maybe? Anyway, the hairdresser was sworn to secrecy, but he couldn't contain himself, so he ran out and dug a hole...and you know the rest. He got in big trouble.

Re: mysterious fairy tale
Actually, in most stories, it was the price Midas paid for having the Gold Touch taken off--
Everybody wants to grab credit for the Athena episode, but that was in-house.

Re: in-house?
(Ie., some say it was Aphrodite who snickered, some say Cupid, either way, it was the regular flute, and Athena tossed it to Apollo--Midas was never involved.)

Re: in-house?
There's a version where Midas boasts of a friend's ability to play the pipes, Apollo hears of it, they hold the contest...and Apollo wins because he can play the lyre upside down. The piper gets turned into a stool and Midas gets long ears.

Re: in-house?
Ah, that's what I was thinking of. The real question is, in a musical steel-cage death match, who wins: Apollo or Hendrix?

Apollo. Gods can cheat.

Re: in-house?
Many would argue that Hendrix was, in fact, a god.
I'd say they're about tied.

Ha! Must be time to resurrect the devil + crossroads + fiddling competition thread!

Re: in-house?
Hmm. I don't remember Apollo ever playing a bowed instrument. Did Hendrix?
Well then here's the match: Apollo and Hendrix, in a cage, with fiddles. Apollo will pluck. Hendrix will plug it in. And the bows will be given to Max Roach to provide heavenly percussion.
