giving birth in water
anyone know of any storys where woman give birth in water? After listening to a BBC radio two programe called "The Aquatic Ape" I was wondering if the idea that we once gave birth in water was reflected in any old tales. I don't think selki stories count as they have diffrent roots

ps

you can still listen to the 2 part program on bbc web site. Well worth listening to as it covers and questions a lot of ideas about woamns role in the evelution of humanity

Re: giving birth in water
I know of a midwifery center in New York at which you could do a water birth--the birthing rooms all had jacuzzis in them for that very purpose. But I think they closed a year or two ago.

I believe the method was developed in Russia a few decades ago. I can't think of any stories that use it. It's hard enough to come up with stories that involve birth, at least past the start of the story.

Kalevala?
This collection of Finnish myths has a creation goddess who falls into the primal ocean and floats there a long time; iirc she might give birth to many creatures while in the water?
