can somebody identify this story?
I've been trying to find the name or source of this folk tale forever. It was in an anthology (I think?) my mother read me when I was little. Based on my very foggy memory, it's about a boy who gets a magical ball of string from a mysterious woman. Whenever he tugs on the string a little, he can move forward in time and skip over boring parts of his life. Eventually he gets restless and starts pulling on the string excessively. At the end he only has a short tail of life left. I don't remember the ending too well, but I think he somehow finds the woman and she gives him a second chance to relive his life.

Re: can somebody identify this story?
I can't remember the name or author of the story either, but I'm 99% sure it appears in The Book of Virtues: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories, edited by William J. Bennett.

It is a French tale titled "The Magic Thread" and it does appear in Bennett's Book of Virtues (links to bargain copy on Bookcloseouts).
