CAN ANY ONE HELP?
Hiya all.
I am just wondering if any body can hepl me.
I love fairy tales and an a huge fan of Disney. I have become curious as to where these fairy tales originally come from.
I have heard that alot about the original versions of the tales are much different (or even darker) than what Disney have turned them into. I have heard such names as the Grimm brothers being thrown around but am unsure as to who they are.
I am not a great reader as it is, but i am wondering if anybody here can recomend any good books (or web sites) in which i can read addaptations, originals or darker versions of the fairy tales that we have grown up to all know and love.......... eg. snow white, cinderella, beauty and the beast, sleeping beauty...... that sort of thing.
Thank you. Candy.xx :D

Re: CAN ANY ONE HELP?
You can actually search through Google and find some of the different versions online. This includes Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc...
As far as books, I'm not sure on. I believe Jack Zypes has a section in one of his books which he talks about Disney and fairy tales. He doesn't exactly like the way Disney has handled the tales in terms of marketing and setting in stone what is the "real" version of xxx story. Something along those lines.

A good place to start is this website. Click on the Sur La Lune banner on top and that will bring you to the main page. The fairy tales you've listed are all there. A lot of your questions have some answers in the Frequently Asked Questions section, and there's an entire compilation of Disney related stuff pulled together by our webhostess also available here: www.surlalunefairytales.com/introduction/disneyfairytales.html Enjoy the adventure: it's lots of fun.
Best,
Alice

Re:
Yea, if you want a hard copy without having to be on the computer, I'd just pick up Zipes' collection.

re:
Here's a translation project site with a couple hundred grimm fairy
tales. www.ucs.mun.ca/~wbarker/fairies/grimm/
Be careful, the names may be different than you would know them (like I think Cinderella might be called Aschenputtel). I would highly recommend reading some of those others as well. Many of them are very entertaining.
Here's a site about Hans Christian Anderson with several of his stories, they take FOREVER to load though

Re: re:
hehe...what this site also offers, and what I personally have found incredibly useful, is other tales from around the world that are similar to the well known modern day versions we have here in the west. These may help you to identify comment traits throughout the various versions of the same story and you can then build up an average of what the story really focuses upon.
I do know that Cinderella first originated from China, at least that is the oldest written version (Probably because the chinese invented paper!) However, it is important to remember that we can never really truely know where a tale originally comes from as the oral tradition was (and still is) so vast.
You might try buying a complete collection of Grimms Fairy tales - routledge edition is very good. And the oxford worlds classics edition of Hans Christain Anderson's tales is also worth getting hold of. All easy to get from amazon :)
