Trying to find a fairy tale
When I was a child, I had a book with the following story in it
(beware, this is a very rough synopsis! :D
) a princess of a clan of fire people, living in a fireplace, fell
in love with a prince from a trible of water (or rain) people. He
eventually gave up his nature to be with her. The book was called
something like "A treasury of fairy tales" (not an original
title, I know), and had such beautiful illustrations. Does this
ring any bells?

Wow, one i actually know. What you're referring to is titled "The Sea Prince and the Fire Child". I recently spent about 2 years searching for the name of it myself, and getting ahold of the movie that i watched as a child. It's not so much a fairy tale as a story based on the ancient Greek myth of Syrius and Malta (the constallations).

Bats for Tea, thanks for your suggestion - although not the one I was looking for, it sounds intriguing! Yet another to add to the list!
