To A Jessica Re: Hollow Backs
Your post did not have the option of a reply, so I am doing this instead. You were wondering what kind of fairy creature appeared as a beautiful woman but had a hollow back. According to "A Field Guide to the Little People" by Nancy Arrowsmith and George Moorse, many magical human-like creatures did not have the power or substance to wholly materialize, and so only presented to humans their front side. But if one was quick enough to check their back side, it would appear hollow. They go on in the section of "dusky elves" to describe the Skognufvar, Wood Folk of Sweden and the Baltic cost, as "at first glance beautiful, seductive creatures with sweet voices, long breasts and flowing hair.....they always keep their backs hidden. Anyone who manages to catch a glimpse of their backs will see either a long cow tail trailing out from under their furs or will notice that thay have no back: what should be solid flesh is instead a transparent hollow....."

Re: To A Jessica Re: Hollow Backs
I didn't see the orig post, but check out Froud's book of faeries. I don't remember if he mentions it or if it is in another faerie "field guide" I own, but there is a specific female type of faerie that has no back & seduces and eats men. A lot of different types of faeries were what we'd call sexual predators now. Creepy!

Hollow Backs
This could be totally off topic, but what about that Gwen Stefani song where she says, "I ain't no hollowback girl"? I was taking it figuratively, thinking she meant she wasn't spineless, but could she possibly be referring to the fairy folk? That would make her a heck of a lot more interesting,if you ask me (though it is a catchy song...).
