The new material...
The new material is:

THE GREAT SELCHIE OF SULE SKERRY, script by Jane Yolen (9 pages).
THE THREE LOVERS (or Lord Thomas and Fair Ellender), script by Lee Smith ( 12 pages).
THE BLACK FOX , script by Emma Bull from lyrics by Graham Pratt (16 pages).
ALISON GROSS, script by myself (15 pages).

The first two are entirely new adaptations. The last two are collected from the anthologies that they were fist published in.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Charles and Terri!
For mentioning my chapbook, The Rose in Twelve Petals and Other Stories. I'm so glad you like it! I came across this discussion by accident, and thought I should provide a link to the web page for the chapbook:

www.lcrw.net/smallbeer/ch...ragoss.htm

The title story is based on Sleeping Beauty, and there are fairy tale elements in several other stories and poems (including a poem inspired by Terri's article on Little Red Riding Hood).

And for anyone who collects Charle's art (as I think everyone should), the cover is just beautiful. I'm also looking forward to buying the book of ballads!

Red Riding Hood Novelette
Hi Everyone,

Thought you might enjoy a novelette I just published called THE SUN, in which a woman learns to let go of the pain of past love with the help of a mysterious man called the Wolf. It's a visually symbolic love story with shades of Little Red Riding Hood. You can read a couple of excerpts on my web site:
www.InByTheEye.com

I've also been collaborating with artist Connie Toebe (who has posted here before). She is turning some of my short stories into beautiful Victorian 3-D books.

Thanks!
Cheers, Lisa

The Fair Folk
I just wanted to post a very early announcement about an anthology coming out early 2005 called Fair Folk. It's a pretty nice collection of novellas, edited by Marvin Kaye:

Here's a list of the contents:

Introduction: Fairies Fierce and Friendly (Marvin Kaye)
UOUS by Tanith Lee
GRACE NOTES by Megan Lindholm
THE GYPSIES IN THE WOOD by Kim Newman
THE KELPIE by Patricia McKillip
AN EMBARRASSMENT OF ELVES by Craig Shaw Gardener
EXCEPT THE QUEEN by Jane Yolen and Midori Snyder

For those of you who have been on the board a while, you might remember Jane and I tossing around ideas about "middle-aged" fairies and what might happen if they were tossed out of the Green Wood...we had a bit of fun with letters....and then we went off the board and had waaay more fun working this out. EXCEPT THE QUEEN is the result of that serendipitous moment--so thanks Heidi for providing the place and to all of you who post here for the great conversation.

Re: The Fair Folk
Let me add that writing with Midori was one of those magical collaborations. I always awaited eagerly to see what she would send me. Her erudition, breadth of faerie/mythic/magic knowledge was awesome. (Using that last word in the old way here, folks.)

Fair Folk
Awww..Jane, you make me blush! It was me sitting in front of my computer, eyes wide with astonishment at the brilliant, poetic letter that deftly dismantled every plot idea I thought I had and made me go somewhere totally unexpected. What a thrill! I enjoyed it so very much.

Re: Fair Folk
I can't wait to read the story, Midori and Jane. I haven't forgotten it's beginnings and can't wait to see where it went. For anyone interested in the original discussion, here's a link to the archived string:

Also, Vera Oak, it is quite acceptable to post a URL for your website here.

Sorry I'm so absent of late everyone. I have been lurking on my own board since the past two months have been filled with renovating my new home. The house is almost finished and I'm almost moved so I will be returning and expanding SurLaLune in late autumn with some new annotated tales and more illustrators in the illustration gallery. My body's been busy sanding, painting, and using power tools, but my brain is eager to get back to a regular schedule of reading and writing.

Re: Fair Folk
Wow--I had TOTALLY forgotten we began the story on line.

What happened is this: we were sending bits and spits of it back and forth, not planning, just letting it flow, loving the characters. And suddenly I got a letter of invitation to a book of fairy novellas edited by Marvin Kaye for SF Book Club. I told him about our partially finished story that was already seriously growing longer than a short piece but shorter than a novel. He signed us up. And we finished it.

Of course we both think there's a novel in it, but neither of us have the time or energy for that right now. But perhaps some perceptive editor will read the story and say, "Ladies, here's a contract" (wave wave) and pots of money (wave wave) and abracadabra. It will enlarge and engorge and become A NOVEL!

Re: Fair Folk
Been a little while since I've been here. So I missed this earlier discussion on the Fair Folk athology. Jane, Midori and whoever else might know: is this book only going to be available through the SF book club? I'm not a member, but it definitely sounds like something I'd pick up.

Re: Fair Folk
I've featured many new releases on the front page of SurLaLune in the past few days. Go to the front page at www.surlalunefairytales.com to see the covers. However, here is a list of titles in case that takes too much effort. :)

Retells a Chinese Cinderella tale.

Mira, Mirror by Mette Ivie Harrison
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt

another new book for the list
Hello all. Can I add another upcoming book to the list?

My first novel is coming to bookstores in May 2005. "The Thief and the Beanstalk" is the first in a series of three books that I'm writing for Simon & Schuster/Aladdin Paperbacks. These novels take the loose threads of famous fairy tales and use them to weave new adventures about what happens many years later. They're aimed at the middle school market, but I really wrote them for everyone.

Heidi was kind enough to include the book in her Jack and the Beanstalk book gallery, though the cover has been revised since then.

If you'd like to know more about this and the next books - coming in Summer and Fall 2005 - visit my web site at www.pwcatanese.com

Thanks!

Recommended Books
The new Winter 2004/2005 Recommended Books pages are now on-line on the Endicott Studio site, in the Scuttlebutt section: www.endicott-studio.com/scuttle.html.

These are primarily books published in the last year, divided into separate pages for Adult Fiction (myth-and-folklore-inspired novels, fantasy, magical realism, surrealism), Young Adult Fiction, Short Stories & Poetry, Children's Books, Mythic Miscellany & Art.

(The Autumn 2004 Recommended Books pages are still on-line, for anyone who hasn't yet checked those out -- but they'll be folded into the Previous Recommended Books pages with the Spring 2005 edition of the site.)

Please remember that you support the Endicott site and our children's charities every time you buy a book through a link on our site -- and that you support Surlalune (and this board) every time you buy a book through the links on the Surlalune pages.

PWCantanese: We'd be happy to review your books for the Endicott site (www.endicott-studio.com), if your publisher would care to send review copies. Here's the address:

Helen Pilinovsky, Endicott Book Review Editor

Congratulations on your forthcoming publications.

Terri - I've already alerted my editor. An advance reviewer copy should be on the way soon to Helen. Thanks for the suggestion!

Laura Gonzenbach Volume 2
This is a little late but since no one else has mentioned it yet, Jack Zipes has edited a second volume to the Beautiful Angiola: The Great Treasury of Sicilian Folk and Fairy Tales Collected by Laura Gonzenbach book so many of us appreciated last year: Robber With A Witch's Head: More Stories From The Great Treasury Of Sicilian Folk And Fairy Tales Collected By Laura Gonzenbach. I remember the first volume was mentioned quite frequently at Mythic Journeys.

Also, there are many Hans Christian Andersen books due out next year for his bicentennial celebration. One of the most stunning covers so far is on Andersen: The Fairy Tales Of Hans Christian Andersen. There's several more on the horizon, but I will wait until we are a little closer to the publication dates.
