Fairy Tale Reading Project
I am designing an independent reading course on fairy tales. I've been reading the stories here on SurLaLune, in a text I recently bought, and on D. Ashlimann's (sp) website for a couple weeks now and would like to delve a bit into the criticism side of fairy tales, a topic I won't be covering as a complit major.

So, basically, I'm requesting resources. Books, excellent anthologies of tales, essays, articles, websites, movies, plays, songs-- anything. I'm not picky at the moment, though I do believe I'll end up focusing on stories in which the young bride is given a prohibition by her husband which she then disobeys. (ex: East of the Sun, West of the Moon, Bluebeard, the Mountain Dweller)

I have looked at the faq pages on this website, but I admit to being slightly overwhelmed by the amount of information available. So, while I do not care about the medium of the source, I hope that by asking for help here, I'll be able to pare down the very long list I have into something more manageable for this semester. I'll probably continue my readings in my own time, since fairy tales are something I've loved since I was a tiny girl begging my grandmother for stories.

Re: Fairy Tale Reading Project
Absolutely start with Marina Warner's From the Beast to the Blonde, especially considering your preferred theme.

A lighter read to follow would be Paradiz's Clever Maids.

Also consider the titles on the Women and Fairy Tales page.

Fairy Tale Reading Project - Found a New Book
I just discovered Joan Gould's book "Spinning Straw into Gold: What Fairy Tales Reveal About the Transformations in a Woman's Life" I read the introduction thus far and it looks like a very interesting and worthwhile read.

The book was just published -- February 2005. I plan to use it as a framework with my Heroine's Journey Group.

Re: Fairy Tale Reading Project - Found a New Book
I suggest checking out New Tales for Old: Folktales as Literary Fictions for Young Adults by Anna E. Altmann and Gail de Vos -- as well as its sequel, Tales, Then and Now. These volumes give brief histories of classic fairy tales and then list and describe the various books, short stories, poems, plays, films, songs, etc. based on them (including work published for adults). It's an invaluable reference source for teachers and students of contemporary fairy tales.

You might also be interested in the articles posted in the archives of the Endicott Studio's on-line Journal Mythic Arts, www.endicott-studio.com. Look in the "Reading Room" section of the site for articles on a variety of fairy tales (Bluebeard, Cinderella, Snow White, etc.) The articles are fairly short, and often get picked up for classroom use.

The Endicott Studio also has a Recommended Reading List of contemporary fairy tale fiction here: www.endicott-studio.com/lists/list-fairyTale.html

thank you
Thank you very much for your help. Here is the list I put together:

I will add the New Tales for Old to the Source books though. I am sure I will need to pare this down for my actual reading project, but in my own time, I plan upon reading all listed.

And I have read many of the articles from Endicott. I discovered that website late last summer and have returned to it often checking for updates and reading old articles that I enjoy.
