This interdisciplinary exhibition responds to the cultural variants inherent in the story that folklorists have classified as #510. One version of this tale is known most commonly in the United States as "Cinderella" although originally the tale can be traced to a Chinese version entitled "Yeh-hsein" from 850 A.D. According to folklorists, #510 is the oldest and most widely circulated tale of transformation known to humankind.
The exhibition will include juried artists' books, murals
collaboratively designed by Chicago Public School students, and artwork generated through partner schools in international exchange projects. In conjunction with the exhibition, on-line teacher resource information will include curricula developed by educators from both the US and abroad that assess contemporary themes within this age-old tale.
