glass coffins and other things
I was cleaning my windows yesterday and a strange thought came to my mind.

In many of the tales of enchanted women Many seem to be placed in glass coffins. There is Snow White and there is another one in which the Woman's brother is an enchanted stag and their home is miniaturized and placed in a glass case. There also is a Middle Eastern tale with a glass coffin and a gazebo.

What other tales are there in whcih the protagonist is placed ina coffin before they are dead? YOu also can add buried alive like the tale Of the Three Snake Leaves and Sinbad.

Re: glass coffins and other things
Well, there's "The Glass Coffin" in A.S. Byatt's The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye.

Best,
Alice

When Danae was pregnant with Perseus, she was put into a chest and thrown into the ocean. Her dad was class all the way, obviously.

Thanks for the laugh of the morning, Veronica.

The Byatt story is a retelling - you can find "The Glass Coffin" in Grimms. It's #163 in THE COMPLETE FAIRY TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM.

Re: glass coffins and other things
I feel ridiculous that I can't recall the title of this story, and now that I want to find it, it's disappeared from the collection I would have sworn it was in... At any rate, there is a story I loved as a kid that had a princess encased in a glass house at the summit of a glass mountain who tried to communicate with her chosen hero via dreams. Of course he was enchanted by her beauty and set forth on a quest to find her. As I recall, there was lots of adventuring and problem solving (how does one climb a glass mountain?) and he won the princess in the end. I'm sitting here thinking about it and I'm wondering with my adult brain if it might have been a retelling of something. Or maybe just a cool story with fairy tale elements. Now I really want to find the story so I can read it again...

Re: glass coffins and other things
"Cinderellis and the Glass Hill" (Princess Tales)
by Gail Carson Levine is a retelling of the glass-mountain-climbing-prince.
