girl saves self from wolf
Could anyone help direct me to versions of Little Red Riding Hood in which:
a. the girl saves herself and is not devoured or raped by the wolf AND
b. the intended audience is children
For example, Thurber's fable or Dahl's revolting rhyme seem to use irony and humor aimed at an adult audience so are not quite what I am looking for.
Jonathan Langley's version may fit the bill but I'd like affirmation before purchasing this.
My daughter owns a pop up by Marjorie Priceman in which the girl uses pepper to make the wolf sneeze up grandma.
I have read about a French version I am MOST keen to get hold of... Bruno de la Salle's "La Petite Fille qui savait volait" (The Little Girl who Knew How to Fly) which seems to most closely resemble the older oral folktale.
Hopefully, the third time's the charm (this is my third post as I try to define for myself what kind of paper I want to write about LRRH)
Eagerly awaiting any responses and thanking you in advance-

Re: girl saves self from wolf
You can find the tale "The Grandmother" in Jack Zipes's The Trials and Tribulations of Little Red Riding Hood, in which the little girl tricks the wolf by pretending she needs to go to the bathroom and runs home.
Here's a short version, and here's a longer version.
There's also a Chinese version in which a little girl saves herself and her brother from a bear masquerading as the grandmother (as bears so often do), but I can't find it on the web and I'm not near my books. It's probably in one of the Norton Critical Editions of fairy tales.

Yes, thanks, I do have that.
This is actually my starting point... I am now searching for moderntales which reflect or resemble the oral tale in which the girl outwits the wolf. Sorry, I failed to clarify!

The Chinese version can be found in a Caldecott winning picture book by Ed Young based on an old tale. LON PO. (Philomel.)

Re: girl saves self from wolf
Tanith Lee's "A Wolf at the Door" in the Windling/Datlow anthology of the same name (for middle-graders) ought to be read by anyone with even a passing LRRH interest. It has a truly unique take on the tale, but I'm not sure "girl outwits wolf" would *exactly* best describe it. Definitely kid-friendly.
Debbie Viguie (sp?) wrote a novel called SCARLET MOON for Simon Pulse's "Once Upon a Time" series (young adult). Can't recommend one way or the other on this one, but thought you might want to know it was out there.

I've got nothing, but I had to post to note that every time I read the title of this thread, I can't help thinking "film at 11."

Thanks. I'm familiar with the tale but had to buy a copy of this after reading its reviews.

A great site! Thank you for sending me to it. That is not exactly what I'll be using for my paper, but I will want to use it in my teaching and notified some friends, who appreciate it too .
Happy New Year!
