funereals
Why do people have funereals and wakes in the first place? Do they really comfort those who grieve?
I don't know what to say at a funereal of a friend. Saying she was beautiful and kind doesnt seem to be enough, yet I don't have any anecdotes of her to comfort the family. What do I do?

the point is...
My sympathies for the loss of your friend. In a large sense, I think people have funerals to honor the memory of the deceased. I suppose how much comfort anyone gets from this practice depends on the person. From a mythic viewpoint, funeral rites are partly to ease the living and partly to aid the newly dead on their journey to/through the other side. I am not sure anyone can help you decide what to say about your friend; perhaps the fact that she was kind and beautiful and made an impact in your life is enough to help comfort her family. We all know there are no words to offer that really help, but I believe honoring all that was wonderful about your friend by saying what she meant to you is a balm to the grieving heart. Whatever you say, if it is offered in caring, her family will be touched and comforted. Again, my sympathy. And I'm certain the words will come.
