A specific take
Especially like the idea of these bottle trees. Any reason why blue bottles though?
Also, a more specific take on the original question (cheek to ask after all this!): does anyone know any examples of objects which contain and/or rob an aspect of personality? - for instance, a person's kindness, intelligence, memory etc... rendering them temporarily or permanently unkind/stupid/amnesiac or whatever aspect it happens to be.

Re: A specific take
I believe, though I wouldn't swear to it, that the Little Mermaid's voice was put into a shell, wasn't it?

Re: Little Mermaid
In the Disney movie the mermaid's voice was put in a shell. In the original Andersen story, her tongue was cut out by purely physical means and she never got it back.

Why blue bottles
Um...gross.
Blue...stab in the dark here, but maybe becuase in general, blue means protection - blue-black is for wounded pride, broken bones,ANGELIC PROTECTION; indigo-blue is to reveal deep secrets,PROTECTION ON ASTRAL LEVELS,DEFENSE;dark blue is confusion(though should be used with white so as not to confuse yourself),so could be used for protection;blue is PROTECTION;royal blue is power and PROTECTION;and light blue is PROTECTION of home, buildings, young etc(ie. young males).
But then that's in Wicca - but it might apply to other religions.Worth a look in.

aspects of personality
[[ does anyone know any examples of objects which contain and/or rob an aspect of personality? - for instance, a person's kindness, intelligence, memory etc... rendering them temporarily or permanently unkind/stupid/amnesiac or whatever aspect it happens to be ]]
I'm not sure about objects, but I've been struck by aspects of personality being magically removeable in the Oz books. I think it's in SCARECROW OF OZ that a witch makes a princess forget her love for a gardener boy and lose her sympathy and caring in general. Something similar in MacDonald's THE LIGHT PRINCESS? And in Andersen's THE SNOW QUEEN?
