Richilde
I'm doing an MA dissertation on the (step)mother figure in the Grimms' "Snow White," and am eager to search out a German tale that predated the Grimms by some 30 years and contains many of the same motifs as "Snow White." It's called "Richilde," and appeared in Musaus's collection "Volksmarchen der Deutschen," which was published in 1782. I have found a version of the story in German on the internet, but unfortunately I don't read German!

Does anyone know of an English translation of this story? One must exist somewhere!

Thanks so much...

Re: Richilde
Hm. I've only come across one collection of translations of Musaus (you can find it here), but I'm not sure if it contains "Richilde." Worth checking out, though ...

Re:Richilde
Forgive me for putting this here, Ronnerandall, but I don't see a way to email you. I just wanted to suggest another reference for your work in case you don't know of it. The Stepmother in Fairytales by Jacqueline Schectman [Sigo Press, 1993] has a chapter on the stepmother in Snow White. [This is a Jungian interpretation.]

Thanks to you both! I have the Schectman book -- an excellent resource; I also have a couple of books by Marie von Franz for the Jungian point of view. I am sourcing a copy of the Carlyle translation via my library -- thanks so much for this lead!
