The Moderator Speaks: Attention DerekJ and everyone else
DerekJ,

Since you have failed to register as a board user, my only choice is to communicate with you in this public forum.

The SurLaLune site is for people wanting to discuss fairy tale and folklore materials in a non-argumentative environment. I have allowed you to continue posting your abrasive comments for a while now and even took the liberty of deleting one I found particularly offensive a few weeks ago.

My instructions to you are to refrain from abusive and inflammatory language. It accomplishes nothing but contention and inhibits the purposes of this site. You are welcome to continue on this board if you change your tone from that of a half-informed windbag to a somewhat informed student wanting to share an opinion. At this time you are undermining even your fairly valid arguments with your attitude. In a fairly reasonable world of thinking people--this board is such a place--your behavior will only serve to dismiss you as inane and downright stupid. You know enough to be an interesting participant on the board, but it is also enough to hang yourself when you think you know everything or have the only valid opinion. The beauty of folklore is that there is not a single valid answer to any question. Finally, none of us here knows everything and you have already proven yourself to know less than many others.

As the owner of this site--that means I pay for it out of my own pocket and spend a great deal of time maintaining it--I have final editorial control. I usually keep that to a minimum. Do not believe that I cannot control your posts although you have not registered as an official board member. Registration makes it easier for you to use the board and edit your own posts. It does not stop me from doing anything I please to anything on this board.

If you do not agree with this, you are invited to depart and start your own board and try to find the few other people who love this subject matter and are willing to argue more than enjoy a truly educational discussion.

To everyone else:

If you find DerekJ's posts insulting, rude, and downright uneducated, please do not respond to him in the future. He is seeking this kind of attention and will only be invigorated by the responses. He gets his jollies by inciting contention. I don't believe he will apologize, and I cannot make him do so since I'm not his mother. I will give him one more chance to adjust his attitude. Please don't make this a happy place for him by allowing him to disrupt the peace we have. We've had vagrants like him before and they eventually get bored if they are ignored. I'm not ignoring him; I usually give people a lot of leash to hang themselves.

Not to incite anything further - I just wanted to, A) apologize if I've done anything to fan the flames, and, B) thank Heidi for all her hard work, and to quietly applaud. You bring new meaning to the idea of the iron fist in a velvet glove ...

Thank you, Helen. I'm not worried about fan flaming, it was more a reminder to observe that despite DerekJ's apparent education, it hasn't taught him to respect others and their opinions as one would hope an enlightened mind would. I'm sure his ignorance is blissful for him.

I'd also like to add that, if my discussions tend to become "colorful" through perhaps too much enthusiasm or overstylization, I have never engaged in direct personal harrassment or unwarranted cyber-stalking of other's posts on whichever thread they occur.

There are rules in the FAQ, and where I may have been perceived to skate on the edge of some of them in my over-zeal, others have openly broken them in their non-moderator pursuit of "justice".
I, at least have continued to demonstrate my ability to keep to the topic of fairytale discussion, and that is where my interest in this forum chiefly lies--"Liveliness" of discussion may take many forms, but maturity, only one.

Thank you Heidi! That was very well put.

I have participated in may different message boards in the past and have learned that disruptive people do eventually stop their behavior or leave. That is one of the reasons I use the name "AvalonDeb" instead of my real name. You never know how far some of these Trolls (an actual term, by the way) will go.

From www.dictionary.com:

"troll

An electronic mail message, Usenet posting or other
(electronic) communication which is intentionally incorrect,
but not overtly controversial (compare flame bait), or the
act of sending such a message. Trolling aims to elicit an
emotional reaction from those with a hair-trigger on the reply
key. A really subtle troll makes some people lose their
minds."

"v. flamed, flam·ing, flames

v. tr.
To burn, ignite, or scorch (something) with a flame.
Informal. To insult or criticize provokingly, as on a computer network.
Obsolete. To excite; inflame. "
