Another Loss
for the Folk/Fairytale Community: Alan Dundes
It seems that we have lost so many incredible artists, authors and scholars in the past few months. I was shocked and saddened to learn that Alan Dundes had passed away on March 30. One of his books that I have been referencing for my thesis sits beside me, even as I write this. He was, truly, one of the greatest minds in our field. He will be sorely missed.

Re: Another Loss for the Folk/Fairytale Community
Oh, how awful ... thank you for telling us.
Edit: I actually couldn't stop thinking about this after I read
it ... When I was applying to MA programs, Dundes actually took
up a very nice correspondence with me. We disagreed on a number
of points, but I'll never forget the feeling of having one of the
great minds of the field arguing with me like an equal, so early
on in my career. Meeting him at Mythic Journeys was a great pleasure.
I actually went looking for more information - here
is a short article on his life, for any who are interested. Apparently,
he passed away after having a heart attack during a seminar. As
role models go, he set an example to the end ...

Re: Another Loss for the Folk/Fairytale Community
He was like that, Helen--would just pick up a conversation with anyone, whatever their "degree" or pedigree, if they had something he found interesting.
I had tea at his house once long ago. Around the time he took my "America's Cinderella" for his CINDERELLA CASEBOOK. I wasn't overawed by him because at that point--silly me--I hadn't a clue as to who he was or how astonishingly important and prolific he was. Maybe if I'd known, I would have been afraid to visit.

Re: Another Loss for the Folk/Fairytale Community
I am so sorry to hear this! I am writing an MA thesis on the (step)mother figure in Snow White, and have found Dundes's work to be so valuable and enriching. (I have quibbles with him--particularly his attack on Bruno Bettelheim--but this is neither the time nor the place.) Very sad news, and may he be in a peaceful place...
