Little
Red Riding Hood Uncloaked:
An Exploration of a Timeless Tale
In an evening of theater, film and discussion, acclaimed artists and scholars present their interpretations of a fairy tale that has captivated audiences for hundreds of years.
A girl, a wolf, a meeting in the woods. Who doesn’t know the story of Little Red Riding Hood? She is the age-old star of the bedtime drama, a symbol of childhood innocence. She is every girl next door, every damsel in distress. And her plight has inspired everyone from psychoanalysts to feminists, advertisers to pornographers, over the years.
NEW YORK, NY—October 3, 2004, at Makor: Explore Red’s allure through
David Kaplan’s short film of the original oral folk version of Little
Red Riding Hood starring Christina Ricci; a slide presentation of
the tale’s evolving imagery and commentary by award-winning writer
Catherine Orenstein (Little
Red Riding Hood Uncloaked: Sex, Morality, and the Evolution of a
Fairy Tale); a rarely seen animation of the fairy tale by acclaimed
multimedia artist Kiki Smith, and a staged reading of Wolf Alone,
a new short play by Liza Steinberg. Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D.—internationally
recognized scholar, award-winning poet, Jungian psychoanalyst, and
cantadora in the Latina tradition—will also be on hand to discuss
archetypes of the heroine and beast. Her best-selling book, Women
Who Run With the Wolves, has over 3 million copies in print
worldwide.
