Looking for the Woodcutter & Tree spirit/nymph/dryad sto
I've been looking for the fairy tale I vaguely remember from long ago about a woodcutter who saves a tree because a tree spirit begs him to not cut it down. If he cuts down the tree she will die. I honestly don't remember the ending, it could involve wishes or perhaps he kills her by cutting the tree (now that sounds like H.C. Andersen, hmm). It's not in any of my resources here in Duvall nor have I found it in my searches on the web. I'd appreciate if anyone could help me find this story or others.
Thank you,
Shelly

Well it's not H.C.A. I've checked that. Guess this wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. drat.

Encouragement
I recognise the theme but I can't remember a specific story. There's a voice in the back of my head saying, "Russia or Eastern Europe..." but it could be off the trail so don't pay too much attention to it. I also have a feeling that I've read it as an additional sub-theme in a retelling of another type of tale-in-the-woods. Sorry I can't be more help but I'm sure the story's out there somewhere...?

Hah!
My memory finally dragged up the Indian version so I searched and found this page:

(I haven't been able to log on to the forum for a couple of weeks because my local library's insane IT policy has banned Sur La Lune on the grounds that it's dangerous to children?! I managed to find a way to log on to this thread though... hah!)

ok..not a great answer
I have read this exact storyline but rather in a poem. In this particular poem. A young hamadryad is trying to convince this young man who is told to cut down the tree that she is the tree. He of course falls in love and is not listening. It was the very first poem in a Victorian Poetry collection I recently checked out at the local public library. The publication itself was quite old...from the late 1800's. I seem to remember another version of this story from a fairy tale book as well with it being an old woodcutter. *going to check book shelf.*

Yes I found it. I have this old collection of stories from a next door neighbor that gave them to me when she passed away. The collection is called The New Junior Classics and on the front cover says The Young Folks' Shelf of Books. The publisher is P.F. Collier & Son original copyright 1949.

The story in here is called Old Pipes and the Dryad. The writer listed is Frank R. Stockton.

The poem I unfortunately don't have on hand and did not write down any pertinent information. Hope that helps.

Wow, has SurLaLune been banned now? What a compliment! Probably just a filter, but I haven't been told of it happening before...

Frank Stockton
A little Googling reveals that Frank Stockton was a Victorian writer who wrote a bunch of children's stuff, and published a lot of short stories in magazines of the day. I found some of his works in Project Gutenberg, including "Old Pipes and the Dryad":

Thought that was kind of fun.
