Cinderella: does it matter
I'm researching into how themes of fairy tales have been treated in the context of different time-periods and cultures. Focusing on the ways in which identity is informed by national, cultural, social and religious interests. I am focusing on different versions of the Cinderella fairy tale which include the Grimm brothers, as well as the Chinese and Egyptian versions. i am also looking into Snow white and Pocahontas. If anyone has any information or pointers on this topic they would be greatly appreciated!

Cinderella etc
There's good information on Cinderella on the Surlalune site that
hosts this discussion board, www.surlalunefairytales.com/cinderella/index.html.
Also a Cinderella article (and Snow White and other tales) over
on the Endicott Studio. Check out their article index page, www.endicott-studio.com/rdrm/index.html.

Re: Cinderella etc
Pocahontas isn't a fairy tale - she was a real Native American woman and John Smith was a real English man who came to America. There was no romance between them and the only time their story has been retold in someone else's version of the story was the Disney movie.

Re: Cinderella etc
In some ways though, I think that kind of retelling has made the story into some kind of legend, one worth studying, that works to disguise the rather brutal nature of white colonists' interactions with native Americans by telling a fairy tale about a "romance." I remember learning about her in elementary school and reading this pretty bad book all about her brave self-sacrificing yada yada yada, which I think is similar, thought not the same as, retellings.

Differ
Tootles--I beg to differ. I think the "fairy tale" of that Pochantas romance has been in children's book after children's book (textbooks, too) for at least a hundred years. The Disney version simply picked up on the zeitgeist and spread it far.

Pocahontas
That's highly possible and probable, considering you're most likely a better source when it comes to Pocahontas than I am. So I guess a better way to put it is that Pocahontas differs from most fairy tales because it originated with true people and events, while the stories Cinderella, Snow White, etc. originated in the minds of the tellers.
