The Yellow Jar
I am trying to find the sources of the two Japanese folk tales that Patrick Atangan has used in his first graphic novel, The Yellow Jar: Two Tales from Japanese Tradition, published by NBM in 2003. All the reviews and articles talk about him retelling two traditional tales but they certainly are not tales that I can find. If you can shed light on either one of these tales I would be extremely greatful. Here is a quick summary of the two tales.
The Yellow Jar centres around a simple fisherman and a beautiful maiden he tales as wife, after finding her in a magic jar. However, she is abducted by a demon warrior but the fisherman's resolve, even after many unsuccessful attempts to rescue her, does not falter.
Two Chrysanthemum Maidens: a monk is faced with two rather strange wild flowers in his carefully tended garden. They are weeds but they are lovely like women. The yellow one is greatly admired and the white one neglected until she is adoped to be the image and crest of the royal family.
