Racism and Sexism in Disney :x
I have to do a National History Day project instead of a final exam in my school's history progam... So, I chose Racism and Sexism in Disney animation as compared to the stories some of the movies are based on. Anyone like to help?

Re: Racism and Sexism in Disney :x
I'd start by reading the tales on Surlalune's Site and then focusing on the Disney films you're most familiar with. Were there any particular ones you had in mind?

Keep in mind also, that some claims I personally find are heresay and the usual rumormongering that happens at release time. You'll want to research the culture well before diving into say Pocahantas or Mulan to separate what are slip-ups and why versus what is faithful. With the fairy tales some elements are very subtle in the older films versus the newer ones, but may or may not still be well done. It depends on the film and what specifically you want to look at.

Also, you'll want to view Surlalune's Archives, there's been loads of discussion on the Disney controversy. Start here:

Re: Racism and Sexism in Disney :x
Disney's Snow White is a good film to look at,
in terms of sexism. Here's an article on the history of the folk
tale Snow White, which points out some of the differences between
the oral version and the Disney version. www.endicott-studio.com/rdrm/forsga.html

Also, I highly recommend Jane Yolen's book delightful Touch
Magic: Fantasy, Faerie, Folklore in the Literature of Childhood,
particularly for the now-classic essay on Cinderella, which comments
              on Disney's version.

 Re: History Day
Thanks for the links! Very good, gret reference...I was actually just going to spend a few minutes each on ones that I'm familiar with, like Aladdin, Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, the "Princess" movies (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc.)... I also may go into certain scenes in Fantasia, Atlantis, and Mulan, and possibly also the "Silly Symphonies". It's extensive, but I really would like an A, and it *is* a competition...

by the way, I am writing about Disney's adaptation of original tales according to Am culture, - The LIttle Mermaid might be worth looking at in connection with racism and the part of Sebastian etc..
