 Eastern Dragons
A good friend of mine is fascinated by dragons, and I wanted to surprise him with a gift.
I only know the stories about dragons from Europe, though, and wanted to find something with a more positive meaning than greed and destruction. I'd read once that Eastern dragons were supposed to be protective and wise. Is this true? And if so, can anyone list some sources online or books about them? Thank you =)

 Re: Eastern Dragons
 Consider the following books:

Chinese Dragons by Roy Bates

A wonderfully illustrated collection of dragon tales for young and old: The Book of Dragons by Michael Hague

www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt

And two recommended picture books:

The Sons of the Dragon King : A Chinese Legend
by Ed Young

www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt

The Dragon Prince : A Chinese Beauty & the Beast Tale
by Laurence Yep

 Eastern Dragons
A couple of other possible sources:

Picture book - "Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like", by Jay Williams and illustrated by Mercer Mayer. This give a very positive spin to Chinese dragons.

And two dragon 'reference' books that cover all sorts, but also have Chinese dragon entries:

"The Flight of Dragons" by Peter Dickinson and illustrated by Wayne Anderson.

New this year: "Dragonology, the Complete Book of Dragons", 'edited' by Dugald A. Steer, put out by Candlewick Press.

Good luck!

Dragonology is the Best. Book. Ever. So much fun! I gave it to my friend as a graduation present and then I had to go get one for myself.

 Re: *subject*
Laurance Yep's _Dragon of the Lost Sea_ is the first of four books combining various Eastern legends into one story. The first two are told from the point of view of an outcast dragon princess and the second two are narrated by Monkey, aka the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.
Patricia C. Wrede's _Dealing with Dragons_ is the first of four books about Western dragons and influenced by Western fairy tales, but the dragons are portrayed in a positive light.
