Re: NEGATIVE/POSITIVE
EFFECTS OF FAIRYTALES
Well, I don't buy a bit of it, but there was some research done at Purdue University this past year showing that fairy tales have a negative effect on girls' self images. It created quite a hub-bub. If you look in the archives here in about November/October you should find a reference to the article.
As for the positive effects, there are a number of earlier discussions here about them, but I like Kate Bernheimer's book "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" which is a collection of essays by women authors about the impact of fairy tales on their lives. It is interesting. I am sure others will give you more relevant sources though. Have you checked out "Touch Magic" by Jane Yolen? It is considered one of the seminal works on the topic. Within this slim volume you will find a vast number of well supported arguments advancing the benefits of fairy tales and folklore for children and adults.

Positive effects
of fairytales on children
I am currently writing a research paper in school about the positive
effects of fairy tales of children. Thanks to this thread and others,
I have been able to find many books on the subject. However I am
also required to have 3 internet recourses. Of course I will be
using this wonderful site as one of them, but I need two more dealing
with information and/or viewpoints on this subject. Any suggestions
would be appreciated! Thanks!

Go to the SurLaLune
F-T pages
You will find several excellent links there. I suggest you really delve into these websites as well. They might be helpful to you.

Re: Go to the
SurLaLune F-T pages
You might also want to take a look at the "Kindred Spirits" page on the Endicott Studio site for suggestions - the section on fairy tales has links to thirteen resplendent repositories of folk-related knowledge, and the other sections are well worth perusing as well. You can find it at:

Good luck!

The Positive
Value of Fairy Tales
I'd recommend these specific articles on the Endicott site in relation to children and fairy tales -- particular on the value of fairy tales for children in abuse situations:
"Deerskin, Donkeyskin, Allerleirauh" by Helen Pilinovsky
www.endicott-studio.com/fordnky.html
"A Matter of Seeing" by Ellen Steiber
www.endicott-studio.com/forbrsis.html
And the essay in the second half of the "Adrienne Segur Tribute
page," which talks about fairy tales and child abuse.www.endicott-studio.com/jMA03Summer/segur.html
There's also a Further Reading section toward the bottom of the Endicott Children's Charities page listing some good books relating to children and fairy tales:
www.endicott-studio.com/helpKids.html
Hope this helps.
