The Little Matchstick Girl
Hi,
First, let me say that this is the best site! You are all very helpful and knowledgable.
Now, my question:
I am trying to do some preliminary research for a paper. I have chosen to research "The Little Match Stick Girl;" We are supposed to use on a cricial approach, such as rhetorical, psychanalyticial, or anthropological criticism, among others. I chose this story because I figured that there would be a wealth of information, such as articles about Anderson's motives (such as upbringing, current political situations, or poverty, etc.), or about the symbolism in the story.
I can't seem to find anything! I got a few of the ideas from Maria Tatar's, "Annontated Classic Fairy Tales," but her bibliography is extensive, and not separated by story.
Does anybody know where I could begin? You all seem to be familiar with many scholarly works. I would be so grateful!

Re: The Little Matchstick Girl
Have you tried tackling the project through research about the author? I'm not an expert on Andersen, but maybe he wrote articles or essays on his own stories. I believe he was reasonably well known in his own lifetime, so it follows that there is a possibility he commented on the tales while alive. Perhaps a biography would be a good place to start? I'm sorry I don't know any to reccommend. Good luck.

thanks!
Thanks so much for your reply!
However, I have switched my topic. I am going to discuss the differences between Perrault's "Donkeyskin" and Robin McKinley's _Deerskin_. I am going to look at the differences in intended audience between the two tales. Unfortunately, I could only find one scholarly journal (we are only supposed to use peer reviewed journals or books by distinguised authors). I am still in the preliminary stages here, but has been jumbling around in my mind for a while (it has to "ferment" first, I think). I am very much regretting taking such a condensed summer course (5 weeks for a regular 3 credits), as I feel like I haven't even gotten a chance to breath lately!
Thanks again!

article on Donkeyskin
There's a very good article on Donkeyskin at the Endicott Studio website (www.endicottstudio.com). The article discusses the traditional tale as well as modern versions including Robin McKinley's. It's by Helen Pilinovsky and can be found under the Reading Room link.
What college are you taking this class at? It sounds cool and they didn't have classes like that at my college!

great article!
Thanks so much for the article!
I go to the University of Colorado at Boulder (you know, football scandal/best party school). This is actually my senior-level writing class. It is requried to graduate and there are a ton of 'topics' to choose from.
Unfortunately, the class is so accelerated, five weeks, that we are pretty much just working on our papers, and don't have much time to do much else. I wish the class were a standard, lecture-based class or seminar on folklore, as I am finding this very interesting.
Thanks again!

Re: The Little Matchstick Girl
has anyone seen Resurrection
of the Little Match Girl? It's a clever and fun retelling of
the original story, but in this version, the match girl takes control
of her own story. Just thought I'd share ^_^
