Illustrations by Adrienne Segur
I have a 1949 version of "Alice in Wonderland" in french, illustrated by Adrienne Segur. The images are wonderful and I'm wondering if she illustrated any other works. Does anybody know?

Golden Book of Fairy Tales
Adrienne Segur is a very well-loved artist on this board ... she illustrated a number of works, the most popular of which is perhaps her edition of the Golden Book of Fairy Tales; Terri Windling has a lovely essay concerning her work up in the Gallery of the Endicott Studio Journal of the Mythic Arts at www.endicott-studio.com/j...segur.html

Thank you! What an interesting article. I am fascinated that so little is known of her early life. I researched all over the internet and could not find my book for sale anywhere, although I did find one 1960 copy selling for $75. Would you believe I bought mine at an antique store for $14.00? Somehow I doubt I'll have that much luck finding more of her work, but that's part of the thrill of finding wonderful old children's books!

Re: Illustrations
Jen, if your French is up to it, you might try searching the web for used book services in France. She had quite a number of books published there. I found a whole treasure trove of them in a used book store in Lyon a couple of years ago, and bought up the lot -- including a wonderful volume devoted to Hans Christian Andersen tales. One of these days I'll scan some of that art and put it online. I've never seen her Alice in Wonderland, though.

Though original editions of her work are hard to find, there are lovely reprint editions of The Golden Book of Fairy Tales and The Snow Queen and Other Tales in print from Golden Books. You can order them from Amazon or any bookstore. (If you order them from Amazon via Surlalune, you'll help defray the expenses of the site.)

If you do a search on the archives of this board, you'll find we've had a few discussions of Segur, with a little more info about her. She was born around 1901...or 1906... (I can't remember the exact date, but it was in one of the discussions) and the woman who ran the Lyon bookstore (which specialized in children's books) said she was reputed to be a recluse all her life, but she wasn't 100% sure about that information.
