Upcoming Publications Part 3
Since Upcoming Publications Part 2 was getting bulky, I am opening a new Part 3. To get it off to a running start, I'll announce for all uninformed parties that Robin McKinley and Gregory Maguire have new books coming out this fall. McKinley's is a vampiric beauty and the beast tale to give it a movie-like tagline. Maguire's is his take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Here's links to the books on Amazon:

And Jane, our ever prolific mentor, has had many great books released
recently, but the one I have kept beside my bed for over a month
is Take
Joy. It will appeal to many of the readers/writers here. I endorsed
it in a previous post, and Terri mentioned it just a few days ago.

CATS and Pan...
All,
Just a short note to mention that my children's
picture book, A
CIRCLE OF CATS (which is an original fairy tale, written by
Charles de Lint and pub. by Viking) is out in the stores and by
all accounts doing very well. They've already asked Charles and
I to do another one for them, which makes me VERY happy indeed.
If you've already read it and wouldn't mind posting a review on
Amazon then all the better.
This October my illustrations will be appearing
in a new, hardcover edition of PETER
PAN (Tor). It was a thrill to be asked to work on this book
and consequently I produced far more art than was originaly asked
for (a painted cover and over 30 b/w illustrations).
Right now I'm racing to complete work on
another de Lint book, MEDICINE
ROAD (Sub Press). Set in the desert around Tuscon and Sedona
it has a very different landscape than I am used to dealing with
and I love it!

Books To Look Forward To
I am anxiously awaiting Scott Gustafson's new book, "Classic
Fairy Tales". It is released in September, and I already
ordered it from Amazon. It contains ten of the most famous fairy
tales, and this is a collection I was hoping he would eventually
take on. As an aspiring illustrator myself, he has given me more
inspiration than any art class could ever have given me. He is one
of the greatest illustrators of ALL time, and I am especially thankful
he used his talents to recreate scenes from fairy tales, as well
as illustrating his own version of "Peter
Pan" (which is my most favorite edition of J. M. Barrie's
classic). Also to look forward to is Christian Birmingham's "Sleeping
Beauty". I've researched it, and he will be starting work
on it this Fall. Some might know him for his illustrated versions
of "The
Night Before Christmas", "The
Christmas Carol", and the wonderful "The
Classic Treasury of Hans Christian Anderson". And I wonder
what K. Y. Craft is up to!

Salt Roads_: I tore through it last night, and dreamed of Jeanne
wandering the streets where I had so recently been. Nalo - it's

Yamabushi
The December Realms
of Fantasy should be on sale in a couple of days with my Japanese
mountain monk/tengu story, "Yamabushi." Pleased as I am
about that, I'm even more pleased by the illustration. The artwork
was done by Paul Lee (he does comics as well, and has worked on
"Hellblazer" and "Dhampire," among others).
The illustration is simply gorgeous.

I'm afraid I don't want to go and make a fool of myself but what the hey. I have read it and how beautiful. I love your artwork I can't even begin to tell you how it stirs that little ache bone that catches in the throat.
I've been living in Indiana but grew up in WV and your drawings made me miss hills with that deep groaning only trees give in great winds. I'm being I know very silly terrible metaphors..but this is what good art and writing does to me every time. I shall continue looking for your wee bits of beauty until your next works...and I hope you and Mr. De Lint continue such beautiful collaborations.

New Hans Christian Andersen translation...
Hello,
I ran into a new
translation of Hans Christian Andersen at the bookstore today by
Jeffrey Frank (Translator) and Diana Crone Frank (Translator).
Does anybody have any thoughts about the need for a new translation or the quality of this one?

If they are fresh, new translations can be helpful. But since I do not read Danish, I will probably never know how accurate one translation is compared to another. I have the same problem with the German tales, but can read Perrault's original French well enough to get a sense of his own language.
I haven't had a chance to look at the new book, but admit to an interest in it. If it matches up to its description, I hope it will at least gather information about Andersen and some of his most popular tales into one accessible volume for popular consumption. On a personal note, I was hoping it would inspire me to add Little Mermaid and perhaps a few other tales to SurLaLune. I receive frequent requests for Mermaid especially, so I will probably get around to it some time in the next few months, but I am finishing annotations for other tales already on the site first.
