Help - English project on fairy tales... no clue!
Help! Im supposed to be doing an English project on fairy tales... and the only study I have ever done on fairy tales was my mum reading them to me when I was little! I was thinking about the essay title - "Educational value of fairy tales" or something along those lines... the essay has to show an ability to analyse and criticize... I am looking for books offering an in depth analysis of fairy tales... anyone know any?

Some basics
First, you might want to look around here (discussion board archives, the links on the site) and then go to:
www.endicottstudios.com
Some books you might check out from the library:
Maria Tatar _The
Classic Fairy Tales_ (This book is a collection of all sorts
of versions of many of the famous tales. It also has a wonderful
introduction and some great articles on the study of fairy tales
in the back.)
Anything by Jack Zipes (You might check out _Don't
Bet on the Prince_ or _Sticks
and Stones_ for your paper)
Bruno Bettelheim _The
Uses of Enchantment_ (Lots of people disagree with Bettelheim,
but his ideas are interesting and a good place to start)
Are you in college or high school? If you're in college:
Maria Warner _Fron
the Beast to the Blonde_
Kate Bernheimer _Mirror,
Mirror on the Wall_
Good luck!

Thank you
Thank you for the information! I will try finding the books on the Internet! My biggest problem is that I live in Germany... and there are no English libraries! I am in my last year of school, and this project counts as 75% of my English grade... I am searching 4 books 2 buy over amazon, any books you would recommend?

Re: Thank you
I'd recommend buying:
From the Beast to the Blonde by Marina Warner
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt
The Great Fairy Tale Tradition by Jack Zipes
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt
The Classic Fairy Tales by Maria Tatar
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt
Runners-up would be
The Classic Fairy Tales by Peter and Iona Opie
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt
The Uses of Enchantment by Bruno Bettelheim (just to understand what everyone is always referencing)
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...lalufairyt

Educational value of fairy tales
Hi!
There`s so much to say about the educational value of fairy tales.
If you are after the general a very good place to start is Betty
Rosens book "And
none of it was nonsense", were she relates her own experiences
with inspiring school children to creativity and understanding be
the use of fairy tales.

Great Responses!
Thanks a lot for all your help! I have found 2 useful books by Jack Zipes and 2 by Maria Tatar, and will b ordering lots of books off amazon!
Apparently it is possible to order books from our local library too, so that will be great! Thanks again for the good tips!
